SCDC Release and Discharge Paths
A person leaving SCDC may reach sentence discharge, probation, parole, community supervision, or supervised reentry. Each label has a different meaning. Discharge usually marks the end of the state prison term, although another case or authority may still matter. Parole permits release under conditions before the sentence is fully complete. Probation is court-ordered community supervision, and community supervision or supervised reentry can place the person under SCDPPPS after prison. A transfer between SCDC institutions is not a release.
The dedicated SCDC Released Inmate Search provides the strongest public confirmation of an SCDC departure. It returns an actual release date and release type for the state custody episode. A supervision-based type points to the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services for the next status check. If another detainer applies, departure from SCDC may still lead to custody elsewhere. The SCDC result proves what happened in the state prison system, not freedom from every local or federal authority.
Search SCDC Released Inmate Records
SCDC provides two search routes with opposite scopes. The ordinary search covers people currently sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC. Its disclaimer says information is current as of midnight the prior day and excludes released offenders, county detainees, people on parole or probation, juveniles, and current fugitives. The released-inmate tool instead searches past SCDC departures. Choosing the correct route avoids treating a present prisoner as released or overlooking a person who has left the state institution.
Use the released record in this order:
- Open the official SCDC released-inmate search and enter the release-date start and end values.
- Select Laurens County when that dataset context fits the person. The county is required, and Laurens uses code 30 in the service.
- Review SCDC ID, name, sex, race, age, release date, release type, and county. The sex-offender selection is optional.
- Use the export only when added fields such as SID, victim flag, detainer flag, or most serious offense are needed for the custody question.
- Follow probation, community supervision, supervised reentry, or parole through SCDPPPS. Check a named detainer with the receiving authority.

SCDC Release Search Fields
The state released list contains more direct release evidence than the current prisoner tool, but it is not a full correctional file. Its visible fields allow identity matching and explain the recorded departure. The export can add identifiers and flags that help distinguish people with similar names. None of these fields replaces a court order, and the list displays no inmate photograph.

The released list observed for Laurens County contained several release types, including RELEASED, PROBATION, COMMUNITY SUPV, and SUPV RE-ENTRY. Those terms should remain distinct. When current incarceration is still possible, check the SCDC current-search disclaimer and route. A match there indicates current state custody, not a completed discharge.

Fees do not guarantee that every requested field can be released. Ask for reasonably segregable nonexempt portions when part of a record may be protected. No Laurens County SCDC Prison
SCDC's current institution directory lists 21 institutions by county and identifies no operating SCDC prison in Laurens County. This is a statewide system page because Laurens County residents and defendants can enter state custody after sentencing. It is not a page for a brick-and-mortar Laurens facility. State placement can occur anywhere within SCDC, and an institution in Greenwood, Greenville, or Spartanburg County should not be relabeled as local to Laurens.
That geographic point changes the search method. Johnson Detention Center is the identified local adult jail. SCDC becomes relevant after a state commitment or when records show transfer into state custody. The ordinary SCDC search can confirm a present placement, and the released list can confirm a later SCDC departure. The county jail record should document the earlier local exit, while the state record documents what followed inside SCDC.
The official SCDC institutions directory supplies the current location list. Its absence of a Laurens County institution supports only that careful statement. It does not mean people from Laurens County are never incarcerated by SCDC.

This is the correct positive-release route for state prisoners. It should never be presented as the Johnson Detention Center roster or county release log.
SCDC Projected and Actual Release
South Carolina's Release Date Calculator is an estimate tool, not the final record for a named incarcerated person. Its disclaimer describes an earliest-possible scenario that assumes all possible good-time and work credits. A date can move later when credits are not earned or are forfeited. The calculator also excludes Youthful Offender Act cases and does not account for prior or later convictions. It cannot calculate the authoritative date for someone already sentenced.
County and state calculations must stay separate. A pretrial Johnson detainee may leave on bond and have no sentence-completion date. A short local sentence may involve local credit rules. Once a state sentence is committed to SCDC, state computation applies. Questions about a named state prisoner's calculation go to SCDC Inmate Records at 803-896-8531, while the dedicated released list supplies the actual public date after departure.
Several events can change a projected SCDC date. Sentence corrections, jail-credit review, detainers, later convictions, discipline, and loss of earned credit can alter the computation. Parole eligibility and a parole hearing are also not the same as physical release. Even a favorable release decision may require conditions, planning, or resolution of a detainer before custody ends.
The ordinary SCDC search can also clarify a county-jail roster disappearance. Its current-prisoner scope includes photos and public information for people reported incarcerated in SCDC as of the prior midnight. A matching current result supports transfer into state custody when the identity and dates align. It does not show that Johnson Detention Center released the person to the community. If the name is absent from both SCDC tools, widen the released-list dates, verify the SCDC ID and spelling, and request the record rather than assigning a status.
Actual release proof comes after the event. Preserve the exact SCDC release type because RELEASED, PROBATION, COMMUNITY SUPV, and SUPV RE-ENTRY describe different next steps. A detainer flag in the export can also signal another custodian's interest. When that flag affects the meaning, identify the receiving authority before describing where the person went.
